Taken in 2020 at 99 or 100 years old during a get-together of the Czech "Sokol." The word "sokol" means a hawk or a falcon. This was, and still is, a large group of Czech and Slovak people who engage in physical exercise, and who put on a public show of choreographed exercise and patriotism once every six years. It was a huge movement during the First Republic of Czechoslovakia (1918-1938), then during the war and the Communist time it was suppressed, but after the Velvet Revolution it made a pretty impressive comeback.

“Danesism” was Frank’s tongue-in-cheek name for his personal philosophy of life. It was a combination of wisdom gleaned from the ancient philosophers, such as Plato and Socrates; a solid foundation of true science, not what passes for “science” by those who are threatened by honest questions; and a very high set of ethics that was hard-wired into his character and reinforced by his strong moral upbringing; all topped off with a generous dose of humor, fueled by mulled red wine and rum.
As to the modern debate over the origin of the universe and of life, he generally believed in Darwinian evolution. That was what he had been taught in school, and in his mind, that was the most likely explanation. However, he also recognized the shortcomings of Darwinism and did not agree with the diehard Darwinians who refused to allow any questions or debate on the subject. He used to say that they were just as bad as the religious fanatics who refuse to look at the scientific evidence. He was more of an agnostic than a Christian, but he admired and respected Christians who devoted their lives to helping those in need and frequently helped them financially.
Danesism is not rigid; it is subject to change as new information comes to light.
A true Danesist does not take himself – or others – too seriously.
The Danesist Church has one patriarch, one prophet, one high priest and one parishioner: Frank Danes. This, however, does not exclude others from joining the church, staying as long as they wish, and leaving when they decide it’s too silly. A favorite saying of his was: “Once we’ve got the silliness out of our system, we will go and see how much weight we’ve lost.”
A true Danesist does not support any modern political party. He is a Monarchist, as evidenced by his preference for Monarch rum.
However, rum by itself is not quite enough; rather, it is best suited as an additive to dilute a cup of mulled red wine. In his own words:
"Hot wine diluted by a squirt of rum has, so far, protected me from viruses, bacteria, tapeworms, smallpox, big pox and middle-size pox."
Frank often mused, not entirely in jest, that the modern Western political system is fundamentally flawed. In his opinion, democracy is not a good solution, because “the people” who vote are ignorant. He dreamed of a “benevolent dictatorship” as the ideal solution. A country, he said, should be ruled by a monarch, because a monarch looks much farther into the future than just the next election cycle and makes decisions based on what will benefit the country for generations to come. He often threatened to take over, crown himself the King of the Czech Kingdom and restore order, as it used to be in the good old days. Among other things, people found guilty of misdemeanors would be required to pay tributes to support the royal beer brewery.
A Danesist spends a good amount of time pondering the deep questions of life. He then realizes, to his dismay, that he has spent valuable time “drilling holes in the clouds.” You drill and drill, and when you are done, it is the same as it was before. Nonetheless, it is the sacred duty of a true Danesist to periodically solve all the problems of the world over a cup of hot wine. With rum.
In his later years, Frank was frequently asked: “What’s your secret to a long life?” His answer was: “You must at all costs avoid premature death!”
Danešismus
„Danešismus“ – tak Zdeněk Daneš s úsměvem pojmenoval svou osobní životní filozofii.
Byla to kombinace moudrosti získané od starověkých filozofů, jako byli Platón a
Sokrates; solidního základu skutečné vědy, nikoli toho, co za „vědu“ vydávají ti, kdo se
bojí upřímných otázek; a velmi vysoké etiky, která byla pevně zakořeněna v jeho
charakteru a posílena jeho silnou morální výchovou; to vše doplněné štědrou dávkou
humoru, poháněného svařeným červeným vínem a rumem.
Pokud jde o moderní debatu o původu vesmíru a života, obecně věřil v darwinovskou evoluci. To ho učili ve škole a v jeho mysli to bylo nejpravděpodobnější vysvětlení. Uznával však také nedostatky darwinismu a nesouhlasil s tvrdohlavými darwinisty, kteří odmítali připustit jakékoli otázky nebo debatu na toto téma. Říkal, že jsou zrovna tak špatní jako náboženští fanatici, kteří odmítají zkoumat vědecké důkazy. Byl spíše agnostik nežli křesťan, ale obdivoval a respektoval křesťany, kteří zasvětili svůj život pomoci potřebným a často jim pomáhal i finančně.
Danešismus není neohebný; může se měnit, když se objeví nové informace.
Pravý Danešista nebere sebe – ani ostatní – příliš vážně.
Danešistická církev má jednoho patriarchu, jednoho proroka, jednoho velekněze a
jednoho farníka: Zdeňka Daneše. To však nevylučuje, aby se ostatní k církvi připojili,
zůstali tak dlouho, jak si přejí, a odešli, když usoudí, že už je to trochu moc praštěné.
Jeho oblíbeným rčením bylo: „Až se vyblbnem, tak se zvážíme.“
Pravý Danešista nepodporuje žádnou moderní politickou stranu. Je monarchista, o
čemž svědčí to, že dává přednost rumu značky Monarch.
Avšak rum samotný nestačí; nejlépe se hodí jako přísada k ředění šálku svařeného
červeného vína. Jeho vlastními slovy:
„Svařák zředěný trochou rumu mě prozatím ochránil před viry, bakteriemi, tasemnicemi,
neštovicemi, štovicemi a rádoby štovicemi.“

Často, a ne tak úplně žertem, uvažoval o tom, že moderní západní politický systém je zásadně chybný. Podle něj demokracie není dobrým řešením, protože „lid“, který volí, je neznalý. Snil o „benevolentní diktatuře“ jako o ideálním řešení. Zemi by podle něj měl vládnout panovník, protože panovník se dívá mnohem dále do budoucnosti než jen do příštího volebního cyklu, a rozhoduje se na základě toho, co bude prospěšné pro zemi do daleké budoucnosti. Často vyhrožoval, že se zmocní vlády, vyhlásí se králem Království českého a nastolí pořádek, jak tomu bývalo za starých dobrých časů. Mezi jiným budou lidé odsouzení za přestupky povinni platit daně na podporu královského pivovaru.
Danešista tráví hodně času přemýšlením o hlubokých otázkách života. Pak si uvědomí, že – jemináčku! - strávil drahocenný čas „vrtáním děr do mraků“. Člověk vrtá a vrtá, a když skončí, je to stejné jako předtím. Nicméně je posvátnou povinností pravého Danešisty, aby čas od času rozřešil všechny problémy světa u svařáku. S rumem. V pozdějších letech se ho lidé často ptali: „Jaké je vaše tajemství dlouhého života?“
Jeho odpověď zněla: „Musíte se za každou cenu vyvarovat předčasné smrti!“
